Navratri in India follows the lunar calendar and is celebrated as Sharad Navratri in September/October and  in March/April as Chaitra Navratri .During Navratri, people from cities and villages assemble to perform 'puja' including Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi, on little shrines representing distinct facets of Goddess Durga. The puja rites are normally accompanied by chanting of mantras and performances of bhajans and folk songs for nine straight days of Navratri.

First Opinion famous in North India

The story in Northern India moves that Mahishasura, thefamous devil, worshipped Lord Shiva and received the ability of eternity. Shortly, he started eliminating and harassing people and attempted to win most of the three lokas. The gods in Swarga loka appealed to Lord Shiva, to locate a method to get rid of the demon. The Trinity of Shiva , Vishnu and Brahma usa their forces and designed a divine female soldier, called Goddess Durga to safeguard the entire world from your atrocities of Mahishasura. When he saw the divine beauty of Goddess Durga Mahishasura, got mesmerized.

The goddess consented to marry him, but help with an ailment - Mahishasura would have to make an impression on her in a fight. Mahishasura, pleased as he was, decided quickly! The challenge continued at the ninth night's end and for 9 evenings, Goddess Durga beheaded Mahishasura. As the tenth morning was termed the tenth morning that delivered the success of good over evil, Vijayadashmi the eight days had become known as Navratri.

Other  Opinion

Depending on the icon the double of the Himalayas, Daksha, had an attractive and virtuous daughter named Uma. She wished to marry Lord Shiva, since her youth. As a way to conquer God, she were able to please him too and worshipped him. While Shiva eventually got ready to marry her, the tiger-skin clad displeased Daksha and Daksh smashed most of the connections off with his girl and son-in-law. A yagna was organized by Daksha but did not invite Lord Shiva for that same. Uma Jumped into the agnikund and became sati with a belief that she will have re birth and would marry Shiva then. 
Uma got birth again and married Lord Shiva.

Another Legend

Still another tale of Navratri pertains to the Hindu epic Ramayana. It moves so that you can collect power and the power to kill Ravana, that Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga in nine types( roops)  for eight days . He wished to protect Sita from the clutches of strong demon king Ravana, who had abducted her.
